How it works
Finished size is the stitch count divided by the fabric count. A 140 × 100 stitch pattern on 14-count Aida comes out at 10 × 7.1 inches (25.4 × 18.1 cm). On evenweave and linen each cross usually spans two threads, which halves the count: 28-count stitched over two gives the same size as 14-count Aida. The margin is added on every side, so it counts twice in each direction.
Frequently asked questions
What does fabric count mean?
The number of stitches per inch. 14-count Aida has 14 squares to the inch, about 5.5 per centimeter. The higher the count, the smaller each stitch — and the smaller the finished piece.
How much margin should I leave?
Most stitchers leave 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) on every side for framing and finishing. If you plan a wide mat or a hoop finish, leave a little more.
What does “over two” mean?
On evenweave and linen each cross usually covers two fabric threads in each direction, so 28-count fabric stitched over two gives 14 stitches per inch. Aida is woven in squares and is stitched over one.
